Do you like Science Fiction or Fantasy? Do you like Free?

Hello all, I have a deal for you. I have some wonderful writer friends who have put together a giveaway of their books starting on November 20th and running through November 26th.  They have graciously offered their books for free so that you wonderful readers can download them and let them know what you think.

http://www.whatisaplot.com/sff-giveaway/

I had the opportunity to get an interview with one of the contributors, Ginger Booth.

Tell me about your books:

The Calm Act series is a day-after-tomorrow dystopian scenario. Climate change suddenly accelerates to the point where we can’t feed everyone, let alone curb global warming. The Calm Act itself is a draconian plan by the U.S. government to address the crisis by imposing censorship, martial law, and migrant-control borders.
As her old world disintegrates, upbeat programmer Dee Baker teams up to build a new one.
This is a very different take on the post-United States scenario. For one thing, the action takes place during the fall, not after it. The military has taken pains to ease the disaster experience. There is no evil super-villain, just a bad bad situation, and decent people trying to cope against long odds.

Please see http://books.gingerbooth.com/content/calm-act-series for a book and blurb list, and links to buy the books. Or, sign up for the mailing list to receive two prequel stories free, at http://eepurl.com/bUSYaD .

What makes your protagonist different from the industry standard or genre standard?

In the usual post-apocalyptic grown-up story, we have a gun-toting tough guy, trying to protect a damsel determined to be her own worst enemy, both pitted against a cartoon arch-villain. Lots of blood and guts and guns, generally set someplace empty, like west Texas.
In the Calm Act series, Dee Baker is a craftsy programmer who likes to garden. She has a problem. Her world has fallen apart due to accelerated climate change. Sure, she can still grow vegetables and feed herself, but there are hundreds of millions who can’t. She needs protection or they’ll steal her food. If we all play that game, growing food is pointless, and we all die. Most people happen to agree with her, including the U.S. military – law and order is preferable to blood and guts. They’d rather find a way to work together, and shoot the bad actors as needed.

Oh, and Dee Baker lives smack in the middle of the I-95 corridor, the most populated part of the country, about 100 miles from New York City. Climate-wise, it’s a real lottery winner, but alas rather crowded.

The forces for good have the upper hand in this series. Winning just isn’t easy.
The reason for doing it this way is that I believe really, deep down, people aren’t willing to face the truth of climate change. It isn’t a theory, and it isn’t in the future. It’s real, and it’s now – just not to this accelerated degree. I wanted a protagonist who has to face it, with little more than her wits and ethics and friends to draw on. Our heroes have the courage to do the right thing.

What was the best money you ever spent as a writer?
It cost $200 to buy a nice cover for Civilly Disobedient, an intro prequel that I wrote for the sole purpose of giving it away for free. That was really, really hard to justify. But without a great cover, who would give my books a try? So far, I’ve spent nearly $1000 on book covers, wincing all the way. My cover designer Jalena does such a beautiful job on them, though, capturing the love of natural beauty that I wanted them to express.

Do you view writing as a kind of spiritual practice?

I certainly express myself spiritually through the practice. Some people get writer’s block. I get living block, where everything seems to get stuck. I need to write to clear that block.

Do you believe in writer’s block?
I believe writer’s block is my subconscious trying to tell me I made a wrong turn back a ways. So go back and fix that. When I’m on firmer ground, I’ll be able to go forward again.
How long on average does it take you to write a book?

Actively writing the first draft, maybe 10-12 weeks, then another month or two on the end for beta reading, revisions, cover design, and publishing. That’s for the full length novels, about 90k words. That includes research, which I along the way as needed. The novellas are much quicker, maybe a month. On a good day, I can write almost 5k words. Most days are stickier than that, and life intrudes.

Time Ran Out on Climate Change Upbeat programmer Dee Baker is successful in her media career. But climate…

The Duke’s Guide to Correct Behavior by Megan Frampton

Marcus, The Duke of Rutherford, had just inherited his title six months ago and had no idea how to be a duke and then in walks his four year old daughter, Rose. So  now on top of learning how to be a duke he now has to learn how to be a father.

Lilly Russell and her two friends Annabel and  Caroline are running an agency to help women find employment who have had unfortunate circumstances. While Lilly is at the agency doing the books a footman comes in from the new duke's home searching for a governess. There is no one available so Lilly offers to apply and is hired.

She goes to work for the new duke but she has a secret to keep and if anyone finds out the truth it will ruin the reputation of Marcus and little Rose.

A wonderfully written story and  I loved how Lilly stood up for herself and sacrificed her love for others.

Marcus was a wonderful character to know and I love how he decided to do what he wanted and to hell with everyone else.  He was the Duke of Rutherford and he could decide what’s what.

Definitely will read more by Megan and I loved the storyline and love wins in the end.

Otherwise Engaged by Amanda Quick

Otherwise Engaged by Amanda Quick is the story of Miss Amity Doncaster and Benedict Stanbridge. She is a world traveler who writes articles in the paper for the ladies of London to read and enjoy and is working on a book that is a collection of all her travels.

Benedict is a man who is sent to the Americas to retrieve some vital information about a new engine that might revolutionize the world of oil. Amity meets Benedict when he is hurt and she is on her way back to England. He asks her to promise him to take a letter to his uncle if he doesn’t survive. He recovers and little do they know that their little trip would cause a scandal in the ton.

When Amity returns to England she is kidnapped by a man who she doesn’t recognize and she barely escapes but thanks to her trusty fan she makes it out alive only to find herself engaged to Benedict whom she has talked to in a month.

When he returns he sees the announcement and gets her agree to the rumors so that they can find the man who kidnapped her and is referred to by the papers as the “Bridegroom”.

This was a wonderful story and I read it from cover to cover in one night because I wanted to know who the “Bridegroom” was and if I was wrong but then I was right that another character was involved.

Thank you Amanda for another great story and I love all of her mystery stories. Can’t wait for the next story to come out.

Marrying Mr. Winterborne by Lisa Kleypas

Lady Helen Ravenel doesn't want to marry for anything less than a good income. She has a dark secret to hide and she doesnt want to drag anyone into that world.

Rhys Winterborne is successful and has set his eyes on Lady Helen but she turns him down several times. He finally wins but Helen is afraid of what will happen if he finds out her secret and it could destroy them both. Can she protect hm from her past?

Love all of Lisa’s books and this was no different. Wonderfully written and I was cheering for Rhys the whole time.

Hyde by Daniel Levine

Growing up most of us have read the Strange Tale of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson.  This is the Hyde’s side of the story of what really happened.

Mr. Levine takes us on the journey of what Hyde felt during the time that Dr. Jekyll was doing his experiments and how he was living his life and not knowing what was fully going on when he “disappeared” for a while.  It was an interesting read and it made me want to go back and re-read Dr. Jekyll and then read this again to see the differences and similarities.  It was a nice change to read the story from the other point of view of a main character and see that he wasn’t really a monster.  Through the journey it was interesting to read how one must fight their own demons and how another character might react to similar situations.

A Shocking Delight by Jo Beverly

The Earl of Wyvern needs to marry and he needs to find a woman with quite a fortune.

Lucy Porter is the daughter of a wealthy merchant and isn’t looking to marry anytime soon. She has a Season in London but she just wants to have fun and not worry about finding a husband much to her family’s dismay.

When Wyvern meets Lucy he is intrigued and he knows that she might figure out his secret but he wants to be with her anyway and he might need to change his plans to succeed.

An interesting love story and I was so honored to have met Jo at the RWA convention in San Antonio in 2014 and got her to autograph my book.   I have always loved her books and this one was no different. It was such a sad day when the romance world lost such a wonderful author.

A Garden of Lies by Amanda Quick

As always I love anything by Amanda Quick and this book did not disappoint.  Garden of Lies is a novel full of mystery and romance and I loved it from beginning to end.

Ursula Kern runs a distinguished secretarial agency and when one of her employees ends up dead she decides to go and investigate to find out the truth. She inserts herself as a secretary and offers to be Lady Fullbrook’s new stenographer.  Lady Fullbrook fancies herself a poet and doesn’t have time to write the lines herself so she uses a stenographer to take the lines down for her but Lady Fullbrook has a secret that she must keep and her former assistant learned that secret and paid for it.

Slater Roxton, who is an archeologist and adventurer is still recovering from his accident where he was trapped and wasn’t sure he was going to make it out alive.  He has come back home and meets Ursula and finds out that they are both investigating the same thing. He is looking for information on the Olympus club and through her investigations Ursula has been led to the same place. Slater doesn’t want Ursula involved but she leaves him no choice.

Together they go on an adventure that could get them killed but they uncover the truth and discover secrets about one another and find that they are quite good together.

This is one of the many fascinating mysteries set in Victorian England that I absolutely adore.  Amanda never disappoints in her stories which are always full of mystery and romance.

Project Rogue by J.L. Beck (New Release)

#NewRelease #DarkRomance #ReaderWarning #NotForEveryone

“Maggie…” I said her name as softly as I could, the smell of her blood causing something to snap inside of me. I could feel the shift in change the moment my eyes collided with hers. “Why am I bleeding?” Maggie sounded scared and I could tell she was; I could feel it. I could feel everything. Because….” The past and future collided in my mind and I wasn’t sure which was reality or a facade. Images flickered in my mind; the good ones, the bad ones, and then the one that showed the outcome of Maggie and I’s future.

My journey as an author

Well Saturday, April 16th was my first ever book signing and let me tell ya I was nervous as heck. I never dreamed that I would ever be sitting on the other side of a table signing a book with my name on the front but it happened. I am still pinching myself to make sure it wasn't a dream.

I started this book about three years ago when National Novel Writing Month occurred and I didn't finish it in the 30 days that is the time frame so I put it away and let it sit in the world of cyber space for a while and then decided hey let's bring it out again and see if we can finish this puppy. My characters were screaming at me for their story to be told and Lord Brantwell, the hero, was none to happy that he had been hidden away for so long. So I dusted off the cobwebs of the story and got my butt in gear and finished it up.

My inspiration for the story was a picture of a castle  and I thought what if the Lord of the castle met the girl in the village who owned the local bookshop and viola a story was born.

I just let the story write itself and along came Lydia
and Jeffrey and so their story came to light. For
a while I wanted to give up on the book because I
didn't think it was good enough but my friends a.k.a. my serial cheerleaders pushed me to keep going on and so here it is.

I know it's not perfect but it is my first effort of a fully finished story and thanks to my editor, NeeNee Smith of Muneca Publications for taking a chance on me and my book.

I have loved to read and write my entire life and I have written here and there over the years but I never finished anything until last year. It is not an easy road to go down being a writer. There is always the fear of rejection and you never know how your story will be taken and if there will be an audience for the book. Thanks to my family I have my book out there and I am grateful for you all. I have not given up on the publishing world and I am working on my next novel. I don't always write everyday like I should but when I sit down to write I try to write a lot to make up for my lac of creativity on other days.

For those who are aspiring writers, such as myself, keep it up and don't give up on your dreams. I may never be a J.K. Rowling or Steven King but I am happy to have one published and to keep the writing dream alive.

About The Author

I am a mother to two young children, who in turn keep me young. I live in Dublin, Ireland but, I’m originally from South Devon in the UK. I work full time in a pharmacy and write in all my spare time: in my lunch hour, when watching TV at night and anywhere. I have always been interested in reading from a young age and then 2 years ago I was given a kindle as a present and it was the best thing that happened to me. I was able to read lots of books ever week and then I started to write reviews for all the books I read. I took this one step further and started my own facebook page – Sparkling Pink Bookshelf. I intended to upload all of my reviews for the books I read. This was purely for pleasure and then I answered a post on Facebook for someone to read for reviews and thought I had died and gone to heaven. I was reading about 7/8 books a week, the kindle made this achievable. I would read at any opportunity I could, even staying up til the small hours to finish a book. I loved it. Then one day I was asked to beta read a book – I loved this side of it, it was so exciting. I have worked with a number of indie authors and have remained loyal to a few select authors and I beta read all their After a year or more of doing this, I thought maybe I could write some of the stories that were in my head and I just decided to write and see what happened. I wrote about 70% of a story and then saw a post for the NaNoWriMo competition – to write 50,000 words in 30 days, I decided that this was a challenge I wanted to take and the Til Death Us Do Part series was born. I am always thinking of situations that can be turned into a story and have started a few stories, which in turn will be completed and released to my readers. I love to hear what my readers have to say about my work and please find my links below. Thank you for your support and I hope you enjoy this series of books as much as I enjoyed writing them.

It's Here...............Jill Shavis' Nobody But You is now available.

Welcome to Cedar Ridge Colorado and to the Kincaid family. I just finished reading book #3 so I have to go and find the first two but I loved this book and can't wait to go back and find the others. I love Jill's books anyway and if you haven't had a chance to read any of her series I suggest you pick one up today.

In this novel we meet Jacob Kincaid who has been serving his country in the Army Special Forces unit and after the death of one of his "brothers" who was killed in action he comes home to think about what he wants to do with his life and check on his mom who is not of stable mind and lives in a nursing facility. He's not sure of his family's reaction to his homecoming so he stays low for a while to see how everyone is doing. While he is staying at a cabin by the lake he sees a boat moored out on the dock and he doesn't know who it belongs to so he goes down to investigate and meets Ms. Sophie Marren.

Sophie Marren has come to Cedar Ridge to start over after her divorce from her ex-husband Lucas, who took everything in the divorce because she wanted no reminders but she did take the one thing he loved more than her, the boat, and she is starting to regret it because it turns out she is seasick. She has parked the boat in different places around Cedar Ridge and she picked the cabin dock only to be found out by Jacob. When he comes down to the boat she thinks he is water patrol and she figures that's it she's in trouble but he tells her that she either needs to get a permit or park down at the public beach. While she is talking to Jacob, one of Lucas' floozies comes to the boat thinking he is there and gets a nice surprise. Sophie is so mad she goes down below to get her stuff and when she pulls open the drawer she sees lingerie and a rabbit vibrator and doesn't dare touch it. She takes them topside and when she trips everything falls out on the deck and Jacob says to her, "You have a license for this?" referring to the vibrator. I laughed so hard at that line and I can just picture Sophie's embarrassment.

This is a wonderful book and I can't wait to read more about the Kincaid family and go back to read the first two books.

Excerpt:

He murmurs between kisses, “Juliet, you know I can’t resist you. I don’t want to be the bad guy.”

I nibble his jawline down to his neck as the train pulls away, leaving us in the empty station. Already a new crowd is forming for the next train. “I needed to kiss you. Thought this would be a good place,” I mumble as I work my way down his neck.

He turns me around. My back hits the cold wall and I shiver. He holds my face as he studies me, his gaze falling on my lips as I catch my breath. “Should we be together, gorgeous?” he asks. “Could it be that simple?"
